Excavated in the 1930s by Walter Grant of the Highland Park Whisky Distillery, the Midhowe Chambered Cairn is an enormous burial mound concealing twelve chambers. Built 5400 years ago, the tomb holds the remains of twenty-five people, as well as those of animals. The cairn is now housed in a hangar building, and you can walk on gangways above the tomb.
